Electric shock down arm...

Question
What is it when you feel electric like shocks that start in your shoulder and rush down your arm to your hand.  This is only when I am lifting (actually pulling) weights?
Please help.

Answer
Hi Amy and thanks for writing,

It sounds like you're putting pressure on a nerve when you lift weights and this causes the 'electric shock' feeling - it can also cause numbness or tingling if the pressure remains constant for an extended period (like when you wake up and your hand is asleep).

You should see a Neurologist so he can assess your neck and shoulders and advise you if it's safe to continue lifting r if you need to be cautious.  You might also want to do Pilates for a few months to strengthen your core muscles and I would advise finding a classically trained instructor and having on-on-one sessions in the beginning so you learn how to do it properly (not like the big classes held at some gyms and rec centres which are so poorly done they're actually dangerous).

All my best,
Margot
