Question
My Dr. has prescribed methylprednisolone tablets, 4 mg for pain and inflammation from my L 1 fusion on June 25, 2012.  In the past I have had severe reaction to this medication in the way of panic attacks, can't sleep, nervousness, etc.  Should I go ahead and take this or not.  I am afraid of it, but I want to get well!!  What is the answer?  Can I take a few, and if they start making me nervous, stop taking it?  Instructions are to take 4 before breakfast, 2 at lunch, 2 at dinner, etc until you take 2 on day 5 or 6.

Answer
Charlotte,
The side effects which you describe on oral prednisone are quite common. It does not mean you are allergic to this drug, but oftentimes the side effects are severe and uncomfortable enough to prevent the physician from giving the drug.

What I would suggest is that you contact the doctor as soon as possible, describing these adverse reactions from past experiences, and asking if there is any other option available. It may be that the dr can give you something else, or skip this med altogether. But, that would have to be up to him/her. Make it very clear that you fear this drug due to past experiences. I am certain they will be able to find an alternative for you. Then, in the future you may want to begin listing these on your 'allergy list', i.e., 'ORAL STEROIDS' or 'ORAL PREDNISOLONE' as allergies. That way, when they are reviewing your allergy list you can fully discuss the side effects and what occurred. These side effects, as I said, are quite common, and more severe in some patients than others. If your doctor feels you truly need this med they will explain this to you, but I would bet that he can find an alternative.

Hope I've helped. If you have further questions please feel free to write back in. It is my pleasure to help.
