Question
Does neck manipulation improve the space in the vertebra where the spinal chord sits?  If a neck is too straight (lost it's curve) can manipulations restore the curve (how?)?  Is there any risk in doing so?  Can organs below the neck be adversely affected by a 'straight" neck?

Answer
Judy,

Thanks for the questions and I hope I can help.

I will get right to your questions.

As far as improving the space in the spinal canal, physically speaking, the size of the canal cannot be increased. However, if the cervical lordosis is straightened, the canal will be altered functionally.  In this case, spinal manipulation can help as it will improve the function, thus improving the space provided.

If the neck is straightened, chiropractic can certainly help restore the curve by improving joint function and then instructing you on exercises and traction positions.

There is no risk if there is no underlying disease or problem within the spine. There are incidences of contra-indication to manipulation of the cervical spine, but they are few and a thorough exam will reveal any of these cases.

Yes, the organs can be affected adversely in various ways.  Everyone is a bit different, some people will have complaints of an organ nature while others only have neck pain.  Again, a thorough exam should determine this.

I hope this helps.
