Question
when i sit on a raised platform with my legs folded on the platform for some time and if i try to get down i am not able to stand immediately severe pain is felt in the hip joint slowly by moving the other leg i get released why does this happen

Answer
Dear Srividhya,

The first thing that comes to mind is a labral tear in the joint space of the hip.  This is when the cartilage of the inside of the joint has a small tear, or when a fragment of cartilage has dislodged into the joint space.  I say this because of your complaint of severe pain, and that it gets released. The only true way to diagnose this problem is with an MRI of the hip.  If you do have a labral tear or fragment, it can be remedied with surgery, but you will obviously need to discuss that with an orthopedist.

Before worrying about that, you should really have the area examined though.  There are congenital malformations of the head of the femur bone that can cause problems with cross legged seated positions.  What is more common is muscular dysfunction around the hip joint, the sacroiliac joint, and in the buttocks which can place stress on the hip joint itself.  These are problems that when found can easily be addressed with proper stretching protocols and myofascial work.

A sports/rehab oriented Chiropractic physician can easily evaluate the area, treat any muscle dysfunction with soft tissue techniques such as A.R.T., N.M.T., and Graston, or send you on for further diagnostic testing if needed. Having the affected hip examined is the only way to gain insight to what may be at the root of the problem.

Respectfully,
Dr. J. Shawn Leatherman
