Question
QUESTION: about three weeks ago i went to my doctor who is a DO because i was having pain in my back and sides around my ribs after talking to me she said i had a rib out of place and she put it back into place. After about 4 days I had no pain but about a week later the pain came back so I went to the chiropractor yesterday and he said I had a rib head out of place and gave me a rib brace to wear and said use ice but I'm now experiencing alot more pain and its in the chest now. I was wondering what i could do or if I should go to my doctors office tonight. The pain in my chest and back is 9 now where it was only like a 6 yesterday before the chiropractor. thank you.

ANSWER: Samantha,

Forget the ice.  Ask the DC or DO to do some massage and heat, and then adjust the rib and spine segments.  You may have to keep at this for a few visits.  I don't know your age or health status, but if you have any underlying joint arthritis, then it could be more complicated.  At home, use analgesic balms such as BioFreeze or Deep Relief creme.   I am also an advocate of soft tissue (myofascial) therapy.   Keep in mind that about 30% of your body is composed of fascia.  So while massage may be nice, deeper and more active myofascial therapy, e.g. Graston Technique or Active Myofascial Release Technique tends to be more effective.

'Hope this helps.

QUESTION: Dr.G i was just wondering should I go back to my DO since I felt better the first time I went to see her and when I went to the DC it hurt worse after, especially with the rib brace. Should I wear the rib brace if it causes pain. By the way im only 18 and only have asthma.

Answer
Sure, the DO is fine.  As for the brace, I don't understand why you need it.  If the brace worsens the pain, do not wear it.  Wraps, braces, supports are only beneficial if they reduce your pain right away when you put them on.
