Question
I am suffering from plantar fascitis in the left foot.  Using one of those diagnostic machines that measures the weight distribution in my feet, it was determined I have an imbalance in the distribution of weight and I am compensating with my left foot, thereby causing increase stress on my tendon.  They fit me with an orthotic which I am currently using.  My question is if there is an imbalance, does it stem from a misalignment of the hips and can this be corrected with chiropratic adjustments so this doesn't continue to be a reoccuring/chronic problem for me?
Thank you.

Answer
Hi Barbara,

The histology of plantar fascitis is that of irritated, degenerated, or disrupted tissue along the bottom (plantar side) of your foot where the connective tissue (fascia)envelops the muscles and tendons, bundling it into one common tendon that attaches to the heel bone (specifically, the medial tubercle of the calcaneus).  The best way to take pressure off this is to have a foot orthotic that has a high arch.   Most standard podiatric orthotics, depending on the brand/style, materials, and casting methods (there's lots) often do not achieve this and are either uncomfortble, ineffective, or minimally supportive.  I've found that the best foot orthotic for affecting plantar fascitis is the Sole Supports brand.  They take a lot of pressure off the heel compared to most other orthotics.   Also, the best way at treating the irritated fascia and tendon is with Graston Technique (see: www.grastontechnique.com).  You can see this treatment on my web site (www.drgillman.com).    I would not completely discount the pelvic joint imbalance concept, but it remains theoretical.   I wouldn't bet on it being the cure for your foot.  So long as you do not have a tear of the fascia (a more serious condition that is ruled out with MRI), then I'd surely bet on Graston Technique and Sole Support orthotics for providing the best cure.

'Best,

Dr. G
