Question
QUESTION: I have exactly the same pain as Michael. Right side about 2 inches under the nipple. Mine also started while sitting on my bed working on my laptop.  Mine comes and goes every couple of hours for the last two days. When the pain comes my right arm goes a bit lame and i start to perspire a lot. As soon as the pain goes my arm is ok again and the hot flushes goes away.  Hope you can explain what could be causing this. Thank you. Amanda

ANSWER: Dear Amanda,

I will need more information.

What kind of pain is it?  Sharp, achy, dull, pulling...etc.

Anything happens about 2 days ago?  Trauma?

When the pain comes, what activities were you doing that may cause the pain to come about?

How old are you?

Any history of family heart disease?

QUESTION: Dear Dr Tan
It is a very sharp pain that becomes less painfull as it subsides and happens at any time. Mostly at the time im busy working on my computer at work or laptop at home. This now makes me think that it happens when in sitting down. Nothing traumatic happend when it first got it. I was sitting on my bed typing with my laptop on my lap.  I am 46 year old and my father died very suddenly four years ago of a heart attack. Before that he was very health. No one else in my family had any heart problems that i know of. My mother and two of her sisters died of Emphsemia. I hope that helps.
thank you
Amanda

Answer
Hi Amanda,

Since the pain is on the right side of the chest, then it does not indicate any heart issue.  The sharp pain comes about when you are in  a sitting position may point to posture as the cause.  The sharp pain could be due to the muscles around the chest area that may have a microtear.  A microtear is like a piece of thread broke off of a fabric.  It will heal with time.  With this condition, usually any movement involved in the area will reproduce the sharp pain.  This include slouching in sitting position, twisting of the body, sneezing, coughing, or simply breathing especially deep breathe.

If you are still concern, then I suggest visiting a chiropractor just to be sure and have peace of mind.
