stable c1 fracture

Question
I need some assistance.  About a month ago, my C1 vertebrae was fractured by a falling object.  My physician has described it as a Stable fracture and I am wearing a Miami J Neck Brace.

The pain has been pretty intense, though my Dr. has me on meds.   While initially the pain was in the upper area it has now spread through my entire back and it is difficult to walk, lay down and sleep.

At 53, I had a very healthy lifestyle before this injury, running, working out, taking yoga classes and doing my best to stay physically fit.

Here's my questions....what's the amount of time it should take for this fracture to heal?  Should I be taking calicium supplements because I am menopausal? Is it normal that you have severe pain in your back from a C1 fracture? and finally...When the heck can I expect this pain to normalize?

Thanks.

Answer
I can't give you an exact answer on when the pain will alleviate.  Everyone heals differently.  Anti-inflammatories will be your friend for a while.  Calcium by itself is no good, but mixed with magnesium, phosphorus, zinc and other minerals it can help keep the bones strong.  Look into chiropractic to help stabilize the surrounding joints and help alleviate the back spasms.
