Question
I have pain next to top of coccyx where it joins with sacrum. My pain is not in tailbone per se. It is to the left. Many times it is not even a pain, it is like something pulling to the left and feels stiff. I consulted many doctors. But they are not able to diagnoze. Appreciate your insight into what this could be.

Answer
Hi Sai,

Assuming your doctors have ruled out any cysts, checked for referred pain and have done some diagnostic imaging and it is not related to any specific trauma, you may consider trying some muscle therapy directed at the piriformis. You can see this muscle sometimes can cause pain or stiffness in the area you describe at http://www.necksolutions.com/piriformis-syndrome.html and there is a stretch you can also try along with some recommendations for prevention. Also, there are some ligaments which may be involved. This could also be related to the sacroiliac joint, so I would hope a Chiropractor would be one of the doctors you have consulted. You could try massage therapy or possibly an Active Release practitioner in your area - http://www.activerelease.com/providerSearch.asp

All the best!

Dr. Steve
