Question
Dear Dr.Starbuck last friday I noticed that I was experiencing pins and needles and numbness in my right hand and arm.  This came on without warning and the hand and arm remains the same at the moment.  I had not had an accident or strained myself in any way.  I am getting quite ocncerned as I cannot go to see my GP untill Monday.  Can you advise?  I have no other symptoms.  Many thanks.  Catherine

Answer
Catherine, there could be many reasons for these symptoms, even the smallest of incidents, such as slipping and catching yourself before you fall, or the main cause that I see that most people don't realize is called repetitive trauma, over use of the affect arm/leg/etc.  Writing too much, painting overhead, picking up your children, all could be causes of these symptoms, which are usually due to muscle spasms from over-use, or due to a misalignment of the vertebrae that can cause a muscle spasm.  It is easier to describe that phenomenon in person.  My suggestion is to see a chiropractor for an exam before you make a big decision like surgery.  Keep your appointment with your GP, but also consider a chiropractor.  I am a member of a group of chiropractors located all over the U.S. and trust every one of their opinions.  If you are interested, go to www.sorsi.com to locate a doctor near you.  I am in St. Paul, Minnesota and would be more than happy to see you.  If you have any other questions or concerns, or questions after you see your GP, please email me.
