numbness on top of left foot

Question
Sometimes when I cross my left leg over the right, my foot would seem to fall asleep on the top.This would soon clear up. It's been 6 days since and it is still asleep / Numb. This occurred a year before & aprox. a week later it cleared up.I tried to stand on my heal and lift the front of my foot and it's literally imposible. It's imbarrasing when I walk with shoes, because the foot just flops along with me. When I was 18 I was diagnosed with arterior scelorosis. But I have no swelling or discoloration in my foot. 2 1/2 years ago I was trying to push my car out of the snow, felt and heard my back pop. Thought I broke it. Put me down for 3 days and since then never had any indications of any problems. The foot troubles me and I am strecthing the calf muscle, massaging and while doing so I am searching for a nerve that may make the foot tingle. I hit a spot on the back of my leg just behind the knee and felt a sensation on the top center of my foot. On the outside of my leg, just to the left of the shin I run my fingers parralell to the muscle and notice numbness. I guess this is as thorough as I can be. Any suggestions would be apreciated
Thanks John

Answer
John;

Thanks for your thorough explanation... it makes this easier.

Okay, so when you stand on your heel, yourcan't lift your foot/toes off the ground.  The nerve responsible for this is the L5 nerve root, and the condition you suffer from is "slappage gait"... it's not a good sign at ALL!! You need to schedule an appointment with a doctor immediately: chiropractic, PT, orthopedist.  Have you noticed that the one leg is smaller than the other?  Not a good sign, either.

I would like to be left in the loop as well on this.. please follow up with me after your appointment.

I don't want to scare you but this is important.  There are a number of tests that immediately come to mind, MRI, nerve conduction velocity and orthopedic tests that need to be evaluated. I wish you were here in Seattle, I'd get you right in.
Please schedule an appointment ASAP, and get back to me.
