Question
My grandma has arthritis and she wanted me to look up arthritis and tell her if she stopped eating wheat would that help her, but I cant find any information on that, do you know if it would work and if not how could she change her diet so that she wouldn't be in as much pain?

Answer
Ashley,

I am sorry to hear about your grandmother.

I have read many articles that suggest that you can help control your arthritis pain by changing your diet. Removing wheat from you diet has not been in any of them. Really diet play very little role in controlling arthritis pain. That said there are people that have wheat allergies. Pain is not one of the side effects that I have heard of being associated with wheat allergies. Tension and stress and other emotional responses such as mild depression are common with wheat allergies and of these can make the symptoms of pain worse.

Nutritionist who work with food allergies will have people eliminate certain foods from their diets for a few days to see if it helps. It would not hurt to give this a try with wheat. This is a hard thing to do because so many products have wheat in them.

One thing you can do with diet is to add more fish. Fish are high in omega 3 fatty acids, which can help control the inflammation and pain of arthritis. Omega 3 supplements can really help most people with mild to moderate arthritis.

I hope this has helped. I wish your grand mother the best.
