Question
Hi. I am a shy person who doesn't like to go to doctors if there really isn't a need to do so. I was wondering what these tests point to. I have had several high ANA tests done in the past few years (speckled fine or atypical), high CRP, high Sedimentation rate. I had a weak positive RA factor several years ago, and since then it has been negative. I have had severe swelling of both knees, ankles, wrists, and elbows. The worst episodes are when I can't dress myself or even hold onto anything. I have seen a specialist, but only once, and no follow up scheduled. So I assume that is it. No other appointments.

My question is with my symptoms and test results, does it sound like it could be arthritis? I am 35 and have clear x-rays except inflammation found in my wrists, ankles, and around the lining of my lungs was detected. I am on no medication for anything, and I am really in pain. The worst is a few days before a rain (if that makes any sense). I wasn't told anything during my appointment, and feel foolish to go back again for the same symptoms. I can't sleep. I don't want to go back to my doctor without knowing that maybe there is a slight chance of something going on here.

Answer
Darlene,

Your test results strongly suggest some type of autoimmune disease. These types of conditions can only be treated correctly under the supervision of a doctor.

It is never foolish to go back to a doctor over and over about pain issues. There is much more than a slight chance that there is something going on. Inflammation is around your wrist ankles and lungs with high ANA and CRP means that there is something going on. I would go to the doctor every week until the find out the exact diagnosis and develop a successful treatment program.
