Question
Hello !

Is corticosteroid injection efficient for treating tendinosis (not tendinitis !) ?
I was told that such injection can widen small degenerative tears in tendons. Is that true?
Thank you .
Amir.

Answer
The iliopsoas is a muscle, as you must already know that goes up from the upper thigh to the gluts.  It has tendons in it.  I have never personally heard of corticosteriods being injected into a muscle.  I have heard of it being injected into the bursa and into joints for pain,  but not muscles.  But I am assuming the drugs work the same way in muscles that are inflamed but I can't say that for sure.

I am extremely wary of using corticosteriods.  Please understand I am not a doctor, but I do know about the steriods,  as they were a contributing factor to my problem of AVN.  And can cause bone damage in and of themselves.

If you want to, you can certainly try to see if a one time dose will help your pain, but I would not use the steriods on a regular basis.  I'd give it one shot, and if that does not help, look into possibly using muscle relaxers for a short time, heat/cold, and physical therapy.
