Question
Good day to you Mr Shaw. Just like to ask your advice. I fractured my calcanium on both feet Nov 07 i was advised to let the fractures heel naturally. Unfortunately my right heel has not been so lucky and my surgeon is recommending that the heel be Fused. I'd just like to know your thoughts on this OP. Im a 28 yre old Male always been relatively fit and always worked on my feet i realise that the chances on me being able to continue working on my feet in the future is bleak. I thank you for any advise you give. Paul UK

Answer
Pauly,
Are you talking about fusing the joint above the heel bone (subtalar joint) this joint allows foot to turn inwards/outwards. For heel fractures (calcaneous) they typically may have to do something called ORIF open reduction internal fixation ie with plates/screws...to put the pieces of the heel back together.

They fuse joints together almost as a last resort so that it will decrease joint pain/arthritis..BUT of course you do lose alot of mobility in the joint.
After all is said and done you need to be fitted w custom shoes/inserts etc..which will make life much better for you.
