Question
Hi
My name is Monique (26yo) from Holland and 6 years ago when training for the triathlon I got a lower back injury with biking. (Leaning too much forward when cycling uphill) It was a terrible pain. I was told it was a ligament injury by doctors and that they needed to do surgery to know for sure. I didn't want to. I lived with the pain for 6 years, actually i only felt it in certain positions.
6 years later a physiotherapist told me it was my lower back, a vertebrae (is that the correct name?) had moved and pressed on my CN he said. He corrected it. I went to him because i got more pain and a tingeling feeling in my hamstrings getting worse after a bikingtour.
1 year ago I got the diagnosis MS. Had a tingeling feeling in my hands and feet, numbness in a great part of my body, and Optical Neuritis. And 5 leasions in my CN on the MRI. One big in my neck.

I thought the thought: Could these symptoms have been caused by the injury in my back?

Can you comment on this?

Many thanks

Kind regards,
Monique

Answer
Hello,MONIQUE.
My name is; TOM.
I Think I can comment pretty good on this subject! I just hope I don't over comment! I have a Tendency to Go on, And Go on, Like the " Energizer Bunny".
O.K. Let's See Here! You are an Athlete, This is great! This means, You have great Muscle tone! But as far as the injury to your lower back, And the question you had about the " VERTEBRAE", I Think the Doctor Meant, " LUMBAR".
Your spine is made up of (5) Different Parts, Here are the names, And Quanity of the groups: First you have the ( CERVICAL) There are SEVEN Of those. Next there are the( THORACIC/VERTEBRE) There are TWELVE of those. Now there are The ( LUMBAR) Discs, There are FIVE of these baby's. Next we have the ( SACRUM ) Also Known as the ( BUTT BONE ) The SACRAL Region helps distribute the body weight to the pelvis and hips. All the way down at the bottom of the whole thing is a thingy called the ( COCCYX ).Your Spine is Comprised of a total of ( 33 ) Disc's. I told you I go on, And on.. Anyway! The Tingling you are feeling is Probably due to a " NERVE ROOT COMMRESSION". BUT! MONIQUE! I am Just speculating here, I really would go get a second opinion! If you are getting tingling's, I really would go get a 2nd, Or even a third opinion.. It's your body girl! NoOne is going to know how it is feeling on the Inside BUT YOU!!! It really wont hurt to get different Recommendations From 2 or 3 other doctors, Would it? I bet you, They all three say something quite the same, BUT quite Different! they like to do that! These symptoms you are having are having alot to do with the Injury to your back! What else could they be from? They can't be from you riding your bike! I ride " MY " bike everyday, And I am having My Lower back Fused, & A Titanium rod screwed in next month on the 17th. It hurt's sure, BUT you know what? It doesn't hurt as much after I'm done riding. GO SEE ONE MORE DOCTOR... PLEASE!!!:) I want to thank you for writing me MONIQUE, It has been a great pleasure. If you have more to ask? Please write me again! I am here until i go under the knife.. Thank's for the great question!!! Here is a web-site to look up all you need to know about your back, Check it out!! WWW.ABOUT.COM
THANK'S AGAIN... TAKE CARE...:) THOMAS J HOSKINS
