Question
hi,
i am 23. for the last year i have had burning pain in my 2nd 3rd and 4th toes that is worse when im not walking or standing. i have tried switching shoes etc and i barly wear heals. however since i was a child i have had a large dome shaped raised mole in between my 2nd and 3rd toes. it hasnt changed or gotten bigger or anything but i am worried that it is causing my pain. my doctor said that the mole looks ok and doesnt know why im having so much pain, it doesnt hurt when any of the toes are touched or prodded on. my question is do you know what could cause this? i have read about mortons neuroma but it has been over a year and pain relievers etc dont work and the burning pain is getting worse sometimes going into the top of my foot, could this be cancer maybe in the mole that has gotten into my toes? any help would be appriciated thanks

Answer
Hi Tiffany,

Typically the type of pain that you describe is nerve related. The symptoms could be a neuroma. A neuroma may not necessarily improve with pain meication and the symptoms may be worse after being in shoes all day and then taking them off.

Some people get pain that radiates from a pinched nerve in the back.  Also, some people have a condition known as neuropathy but the symptomes are usually in both feet and sometimes in the hands.

The mole between your toes wouldn't typically cause this type of pain.

What I would recommend is that you get an MRI(Magnetic Resonance Imaging) of your foot. With this exam a neuroma may be identified, if there is any extension from th mole deeper that may show.  Also, any structure that is abnormal could be visualized.

I would see a Podiatrist and he/she should be able to find a cause for your pain.  Also, if there is concern regarding the mole, a biopsy would identify what it is.  This can be done by a Podiatrist as well.

Hope everything improves.  Keep me posted on how you do and what is found.
