2nd metatarsal bone infection

Question
I'm a diabetic, also had french polio 22 years ago, and developed blister on bottom of left foot.  Didn't feel it...eventually got infected and spread to soft tissue.  Went through treatment, debriding and oxygen hyperbaric chamber(37 one hour treatments). Soft tissue greatly improved.  Stopped antibiotics...infection came back...restarted antibiotics and infection cleared up.  MRI showed the 2nd metatarsal joint connected to the toe was shattered at the joint.  Surgeon suggested amputation of second toe and the head of the 2nd metatarsal bone.  I experience no pain, have no current infection (wound sight swab and blood test). Because the 2nd metatarsal toe joint bone is shattered at the head of the metatarsal, recommendation again was to amputate.  I have good blood flow to the second toe and had read about alternatives to amputation such as intense antibiotic treatment of bone infection or fusion of joint.  What other options might I have other than amputation ?
