Question
Hello,

I am new to the concept of upper cervical chiropractic. I was just wondering if it could help me cure a mild, 10 degree, thoracic, (most probably)structural scolioses. I am a 26 year old female, have slight c-shaped spine along with a twist. And how can a condition like this be affecting my nerve responses?

Thank you for your help and time.

Answer
Priya,

With the info. given there are 2 common types of scoliosis the 1st being due to an old injury to the head and neck the 2nd due to a spinal injury or malformation.

Lets start with a spinal injury. If you lets say had an accident that destroyed, fractured, or deformed a vertebrae in you thoracic spine this can result in a scoliosis or abnormal bending in that area. This same thing goes for malformation. If a vertebrae is oddly shaped it can result in a scoliosis or abnormal bend in the spine. The good news is this can be seen on an x-ray of the area. If you have had this area x-rayed and no injury or malformation is present then the source of the problem is commonly due to a previous injury to the head or neck that has misaligned one of the upper two neck bones.

A misalignment of one of the upper two bones of the spine will throw the head out of balance. The unique thing about the Upper two bones is their shapes with these shapes comes great mobility and the trade of is this area is more unstable and prone to injury (i.e. picture a bowling ball (10-14lbs) on a broom stick balancing). So when the head is off center or out of balance the spine will compensate to balance the head. This is the most commonly over looked source of scoliosis.

The way a misalignment of the upper two neck bones can effect the nervous system is via a meningeal torque twist that occurs in the area. This can squeeze down on the brainstem or upper spinal cord causing interference to nerve flow via a penumbra effect or decrease in blood flow to the area.

With the information given and assuming you have no damaged or malformed bones in the thoracic spine. I would recommend consulting and Upper Cervical Doctor to see if you can be helped. Great question, hope that helps.
