Question
My husband had a knee replacement a few years ago. Now the remaining knee gives way on him and he falls. I was told he needs exercises to strengthen the knee. Where can I find some exercises? thanks.

Answer
Betty,
The knee is a hinge joint that cannot be strengthened.  The first thing that he needs to do is get into proper spinal alignment.  This will assure a strong structural foundation and will give him the best possible start.  Then once that is stable, he can then work on proprioception which basically involves the balancing muscles of the leg.  He can start with simply standing on one leg ( and by the way he should do the good leg and the bad leg for brain and body symmetry).  Once he can stand on the bad leg with much success (approximately 1 minute)then he can go to doing it with his eyes closed-this is where the intrinsic leg muscles that support the knee will get a real workout.  When he can do this for 1 minute  then he will not only be much stronger and very stable but he will be ready for the next step, and he or you can write to me at that time for the next exercise.
I know that this helps because I had torn my ACL, MCL, and Medial Meniscus and never had surgery, I did my own Knee-hab with the help of the Sports Chiropractic Department at Life University in Atlanta.  I can now do every type of movement including lateral cuts on the field all without any type of brace whatsoever.
