Sudden tailbone pain

Question
I was fine all morning sitting and standing. But, when I sat in my car (bucket seats)my tailbone began to hurt. It was difficult to get out of the car. And for the last 6 hours my tailbone has been hurting every time I bend, sit, or stand from sitting. Did I bruise myself? Is my tailbone broken? I just don't understand, the pain came from nowhere.

Answer
Dear Chris,

I have difficulty understanding the exact location of your pain since the term "tail bone" is used by some to describe the Coccyx (the boney protuberance felt immediately behind the Anus), and by some to describe the lower back in general.
Assuming we are talking about the Coccyx, I would suggest you take a mild pain killer and see if the pain goes away. If the pain is not accompanied by any other sign or symptom, it usually is inflammatory in nature and responds nicely to Non-Steroidal Anti-Inflammatory Drugs.
If on the other hand you have fever, discharge from the area, difficulties with bowel movements or anything other than just pain, I suggest you see your Physician so he/she can have a look at it.

Sincerely,

Dr. N. Rahamimov
