Question
yes my question is basically that.. Is it normal to have fractures below the fusion after 15 years? The first fracture happened 10 years after my fusion. I had an MRI and there is no disk involvement. I am a nurse and I am having difficulty perfoming my job. What else could go on with my spine? Is this normal and what else may I expect?

Answer
While I am not a surgeon and I don't have much information about your particular case, it appears that the fractures could be a result of 'flat-back syndrome', which is not uncommon following fusion with Harrington rods.  The lumbar discs tend to be compromised and the symptoms include low back pain, leg pain, and often, a slightly bent forward posture.  These types of issues typically arise around ten years post-op.

My recommendation would be to check with your doctor about getting a current MRI to check your lumbar curve.  That way, the physician can give you the best information regarding your specific case and the options for appropriate treatment.
