Question
i dislocated my shoulder three years ago and have recently been in a lot of pain. i went to the doctor 2 months ago and he said that my shoulder was inflamed and had a lot of fluid. since then i have been on NSAIDS for one month and had a cortisone injection two weeks ago. recently I've been experiencing sharp shooting pains running down my arm the doc. says that this means its healing...but him not convinced. I'm still in alot of pain. do you have any advice for who i should go see or what i should do!!!
thanks for your time

Answer
Yes.

First thing, dislocations commonly involve contracted muscles on one side of the joint, which keep the bone displaced from center in the joint.  Cortizone isn't going to change that, nor will NSAIDS.

The sharp pains are probably reflexive muscular contractions due to the body's attempt to correct the displacement (or hold onto the bone, which it 'reads' as being pulled out of you); however, the displacement will not normalize until you have learned to relax the contractions.  When you do, the bone and joint will center themselves.

Best advice:  find a clinical somatic educator who can train you to relax and then coordinate the involved muscles in a normal way.  list:  hannasomatics.com/practitioners

If you can't get to a practitioner, contact me again and I'll consider a self-help approach for you.
