Brace for my Dad

Question
I do hope you can help. My Dad had a stroke 11 years ago. he wears a brace on his right leg. he is fairly active. He walks with a quad cane. The problem is the brace and trying to find shoes to fit him. He has a very wide foot. The brace has to fit into the right shoe. Lately he has been getting a callous on the ball of his right foot. He refuses to wear the brace. I feel the brace is not fitting him properly. Or it could be the shoes. What type of person should we take him to? he may ned a new brace....but he has spent so much money on braces that do not work. Any out put would be appreciated. Thanks

Answer
Hi Marty and thanks for writing,

You need to take your Dad to an Orthotic Specialist and (i) make sure the brace still fits properly, and (ii) get shoes that will provide adequate support AND fit with the brace. You should be able to find some Orthotic Soecialists in the Yellow Pages; most decent sized cities have several.

Hope this helps, and I wish you both all the best.

Margot
