Question
I have self diagnosed myself as having spasmodic dysphonia. Is there any evidence that this disorder goes away on its own or do I need to seek treatment. I have no insurance to seek treatment at the time, but would like a bit of info as far as getting rid of this disabling disorder. IT HAS RUINED MY LIFE AND I DON"T KNOW WHAT TO DO!!!! I FEEL LIKE PEOPLE THINK I"M RETARDED BECAUSE I CAN"T SPEAK CORRECTLY. PLEASE HELP ME!!!! ANY INFO YOU HAVE ON THIS DISORDER WOULD BE TRULY APPRECIATED

Answer
Hi Barbra and thanks for writing,

SD is difficult to treat as the cause is not immediately known - it may respond to psychological counseling, speech therapy, botox treatments or even surgery.

I guess the best thing for you to do is to start with some Speech Therapy and see a Psychologist for a few weeks and see if those two least invasive methods work. If not, you'll need to see a doctor to discuss more radical treatment options.

I hope this helps and I wish you all the best,

Margot
