Back pain right side (scoliosis - subluxation)

Question
When I do shoulder presses / military press I cannot carry more repitions. I get excruciating pain in my upper/middle back that extends to my neck.

I recently went to a Chiropractor and he took an X-Ray and ran EMG tests and concluded I have scoliosis (11 degrees) and subluxation. The EMG graphs showed black and red bars on my left side showing 150% - 224%

He is prescribing adjustment sessions (about 24) for my spine in upper/middle back.

I need to know if I should signup for these sessions and it is right thing to do. Please help as I do not have insurance and have to pay from my pocket for all these sessions and tests in between.

Thank You,
Sansavar

Answer
Based upone what you have told me, this would be your best course of action.  The EMG is a pretty good indicator of just how bad it can be to a laypersons eyes.  It is also important to note that a subluxation is a progressive condition---it will get worse with time if left alone.  Eventually it will degenerate and both the discs and the bones will not function, resulting in neurological deficits.  Most conditions take a minimum of 90 days to truly change, but you will probably see some changes in just two weeks.  Your doctor will likely take another EMG at regular intervals and possibly re-xray you to monitor the progress.

If money is an issue, talk to your doctor about payment plans, he probably has some options for you that are affordable---but understand, this is probably your cheapest option, at this time, because if you let this progress, it will probably get worse, which means more expensive in the long run.

Many of my patients have to make similar decisions.  It is always disappointing when someone has to make health decisions because of money.  It is always more expensive this way.

Good luck,

Dr. P
