Question
Hi Dr Newhart,
I have started going to a chiropractor about my shoulder pains and we have set up a treatment plain.  I told him that for a couple of years I have been having neck pains (as well along with my new shoulder pains) that cause me to get really bad headaches. So he did all the x-rays needed and we began my visits with him. What I was wanting to know from you is ... After I get my neck adjusted within an hour after I start getting a dull headache starting at the top of my neck and back left side  behind my ear I feel almost "out of it" after the adjustments and I YAWN a lot for the rest of the day.  Is this normal?  I brought it to my Dr's attention at todays visit but he looked at me like I was crazy haha! (i knew he would!) Please let me know if you think this is normal or not.  I really don't want to mess my neck up anymore if there is something else going on that my Dr doesn't see.

Thank you for your time.
Thanks
Jessica

Answer
Without a hands on exam, it is a little difficult to diagnose, but I would say you are getting some spasm of the muscles after the adjustment.  A change in the adjustive technique can sometimes alleviate this.  The tired feeling and yawning can also be very common.  Some people, after a good adjustment will feel tired, sleep, hungry etc....I don't think that issue is anything to worry about.
