Answer
Alison,

How will you know?  You will know just the same way you would if you asked any other provider, N.H.S. or not.  Chiropractic doctors traditionally have done well in the diagnosis and treatment of lower back pain and sciatic pain.  Treatment is generally safe and often effective.  There are different methods, however, and my only caveat is that you find a chiropractor that has the proper treatment tables and accessories with which to treat your condition.  Alternatives are physical therapy and drugs.  The latter will not cure your back.  To begin with, a DC must provide a thorough examination to rule out any bad problems and make sure that you are safe to treat.  Sometimes MRI is required if you have sciatica.  This link: http://www.biomedcentral.com/1471-2474/7/16
shows a common method for sciatic pain, though in this case it is "stenosis" causing the sciatic/leg symptoms.  It will illustrate rational methods and also describe background and references for you.  Lastly, any provider can BS you into treatment that is not needed, whether it be for surgery, physical therapy, or chiropractic.  Avoid the following: Electric Stimulation; Heat and Ice packs;  If a chiropractor offers an initial trial of care to see how you will respond to treatment, such as 4-6 office visits in a week or two, would that sound reasonable?

I hope this helps.
