Question
Good afternoon.  Can you tell me what the test "Costoclav" is?  It's obviously abbreviated, but I am not sure what the test is or is looking for.  I can't find a test that is referring to "Costoclav".
Thanks!!

Answer
Hi Jeri,

I think you're most likely referencing the Costoclavicular Maneuver, one of several orthopedics test that assess for compression of the neurovascular bundle (the collection of blood vessels and nerves) that pass from the neck into the arms. The purpose of the test is to evaluate for a condition called Thoracic Outlet Syndrome (TOS). Symptoms of TOS include hand and finger pain, numbness, and weakness. TOS is a relatively rare disorder.

The Costoclavicular Maneuver is performed by extending the patient's shoulders backward as the patient flexes their neck forward. The examiner checks for a reduced radial pulse in the wrist. The test is considered positive if the pulse on one side disappears upon performance of the maneuver. A variation of this test may be performed by placing the patient抯 arms at a 90 degree angle, extending the arms backward, and assessing for diminishment of the radial pulse.

I hope that this answers your question.
