Question
Hi Doc, Thanks for your time,

3 months ago I separated my SI Joint on both sides.  The Medical care in my area is quite limited.  So far I've had Injections to confirm the joint but they have not prescribed any further treatment other than very strong opiate pain killers.  I can physically feel the sacrum move as I try to transfer my weight walking.  I know there are many hundreds and thousands of people who are worse off than I; but I am at my wits end with the doctors here as my appointments with my doctor can be scheduled no less than 4 weeks in advance.  I have been told there are mechanical problems with the joint, but they do not allow patients to see their medical images here and the physician has been not very forthcoming with options or information.  I only have seen him twice and once I was so heavily sedated I agreed to proceed with treatment from him without a second opinion.

The wait times for surgery here is over a year and a half.  I have really debilitating pain, and cannot function in my day to day activities (I'm 28, healthy non-drinking professional with hobbies mostly around motor sports and hunting)  Will this heal itself? should I wait for our health care system? (in the systems defence, I live in a VERY rural area) or should I fly to the US and get it over with?  I've had no previous serious back injurys and only beginning to have mild compression in my L5.  If surgery happens, is there a chance at a pain free future?  I really dislike being medicated but the pain really is  the worse thing ever, I've broken my leg and this trumps it 10fold.   I am not afraid of pain or a long recovery from surgery.  I just want to stop wasting my time and procede as quickly as possible so I can get back to work.  (I'm open to suggestions of specific surgeons or specialists as well)

Answer
Surgery may not be the best option here.
First; how was si joint separation diagnosed? Surely not by an injection as ou suggest.
It is rare and extremely difficult to separate both , let alone 1 SI joint. I think it's awful they won't allow you to see your X-rays, isn't that illegal?
I would go see a chiropractor first, but if that's not possible then see a physical therapist. Your diagnosis sounds fishy to me. I would like you to ask for the X-ray or MRI report , not the films but just the report. And please write me back.
Do you have chiropractors where you are?
