Question
Hello, I recently visited my wife's chiropractor due to severe muscle spasms in my back.He took some x rays in the standing position,The results were my right hip was degenerative, showing very little joint space.I have never seen a hip x ray before,so I was baffled being only 33.The Dr. suggested adjustments to help allow more joint space. After two adjustments I was directed by my employer to receive care from the health clinic, due to my spasms occurring while at work.I went to the clinic and 6 X-rays were taken in the lying down position. The Dr. came in and showed me the x rays, and told me my hips looks perfectly normal.I asked her if having two adjustments would change the x ray,she said no.I am very confused and would appreciate any advice. Thanks Chris

Answer
Hello Christopher,

With weight bearing X-rays the space may be dramatically reduced due to the pressure on the joint from standing.  So, weight bearing is the preferred choice.  If the joint space is narrowed there should be other signs of wear and tear, increased density of the bone etc.  Ultimately a MRI of the hips is the gold standard, MRI show the cartilage and soft tissues...X-rays do not.

Have a great day,
Dr. Brendon O'Brien D.C.
