Question
I have an L5 herniated disc with a fragment impinging on the s1 nerve root. I do not have any pain, but rather a numbing in the back of my right thigh and calf and heel. I have lost a reflex in the anckle area. The surgeon says I need to have the fragment surgically removed in order to regain the reflex in my right foot. Is there any other way besides surgically to fix this?

Answer
Hello Karen,

You may want to have surgery, the disc fragment can move around like a pebble grinding away at the whole joint.  In your case, sooner you remove it the better!  Longer the pressure is on the nerve increases the possibility of permanent nerve damage.

Have a great day,
Dr. Brendon O'Brien D.C.
