Answer
Terrence,

I can't give you a diagnosis over the Internet, as I have no idea what your clinical history entails.

However, in general, rib pain with swelling generally indicates inflammation, usually as a result of over-exertion or injury, due to a strained muscle. The pain is usually worse when breathing in. Rib muscle strains are usually self-limiting (it eventually goes away on is own) and symptoms can be alleviated with over the counter anti-inflammatory medication, rest, ice when inflammation is present (usually the first 24-48 hours), followed by heat (after the first 48 hours).

Seeing a chiropractor who is skilled in soft tissue manipulation or your primary care physician would be a good idea if your symptoms are bothersome or continue.

I hope this answers your question.
