Question
Dear Dr. Starbuck,
Hi! My name is Ashley and I attend school at Monroe Community College in New York. I am working on an English research paper on how massage therapy (mostly Rolfing) can help with back injurys. I was wondering if you happen to know anything about Rolfing and whether or not it works to relieve pain? If you could write back it would be greatly appreciated! Thank you for your time!

Sincerely,
Ashley

Answer
There are many types of massage; deep tissue, myofacial, rolfing, reiki, relaxing; and all have a specific techniques to follow, but the similarity between them all is that they are primarily used to remove connective tissue adhesions.  I have not witnessed rolfing personally, have only read about a little, but sounds very similar to deep tissue stripping.  I really can't give you much more than that, except for I strongly believe that it should be used in conjunction with chiropractic treatments to release muscle tension and realign the body.  If you have any more questions, I would be more than happy to answer them.
