Question
Sir,

I fell down at work in January 2007 on some oil and my knee popped out of place and I hurt my back.  The orthopedic doctor says I have patellar sublaxaction but the MRI for my back "looks okay".  However, I continue to be in a lot of pain and can't sit for long periods, can't walk for long periods, and can't lay for long either.  I find myself changing positions all the time.  I work at a computer as my full time employment, however, the ortho doctor hasn't released me to go back to work due to me not being able to sit/stand, etc., for long periods of time.  Also, I can't drive far or walk far as my knee continues to lock out or the knee cap pops out.  I've done physical therapy and I'm not being referred to a doctor who specializes in chronic back pain.  I am confused on how the MRI can "look" okay when in fact I'm not sleeping very well (sometimes close to 48 hours at a time).... the pain is in my lower back and sometimes shoots down my right buttock area down my leg.  Please help me!

Answer
Because the MRI doesn't show you muscle strain.  You have severely altered the way you walk when you hurt you knee, and that has implications on how your back move and your ability to hold your posture for a period of time.  You also could have injured you hip which will also alter your walk and cause back discomfort.  I suggest going to a chiropractor.  We are more than just "back doctors", we treat every joint in the body from head to toe, including knees.  I am a member of a group of chiropractor that if recommend to everyone because I know they think like I do.  If you are interested, go to www.sorsi.com to locate a doctor near you.  I am in St. Paul, Minnesota and would be happy to see you.  If you have any other questions or concerns, please email me.
