Question
I am 43 years old and had an accident on a fairground ride, after which i was sent for a MRI scan. Can you explain to me what my MRI scan means please and what i can do to relieve the pain in my lower back.
A broad based disc protrusion at L4/5, advanced facet joint hypertrophy, severe lateral recess narrowing causing a probable irritation of the L5 nerve root. There is also advanced degenerate disease at the L5/S1 disc.  I have also just been diagnosed with fibromyalgia.

Answer
Hi Carole,

A broad based disc protrusion is a disc that is pushed out of its normal place. These are easily reduced with spinal decompression or flexion.distraction. Facet joint hypertrophy is just enlargement of the articular facets and is a result of wear and tear commonly referred to as arthritis.

severe lateral recess narrowing causing a probable irritation of the L5 nerve root. This is serious and will require extensive F/D treatments of 4-6 months. The L5/S1 disc degeneration is easily repaired with F/D as well.

Here is a link describing the procedure.
