Question
Hi was given great advice regarding options (Non evasive surgery) for my back problem, but even 9 months after my injury have not been offered or received any treatment although in pain especially after laying down! Told to do muscle strengthening exercises, no instructions, but this cause more discomfort. If no surgery what is the time expectancy of my back feeling stronger and the pain be less? My GP wants to refer me back to the hospital but what will they do now?

Answer
Hi Andy,

When you have has a compression fracture, it is extremely important to be under a supervised exercise regime. Strengthening exercises are greatly beneficial but they must be done with correct form in order to prevent aggravation of your injury. There are also specific exercises that you should be doing and some that you should be avoiding. With the right exercise program and some pain control modalities [electrical stimulation, laser therapy, ice/heat] you should be able to achieve some pain relief and recovery.

Without a proper exercise program it is unlikely that your back will start to feel stronger. Your GP may want to refer you back to the hospital to consider surgery since you are still experiencing significant discomfort 9 months after the injury.

You should also consider consulting a chiropractic doctor or physical therapist that offers back rehabilitation therapy for a customized exercise program.

I hope this helps!

Dr. Liza
