midback pain

Question
I was jumping on a trampoline (doing flips) and landed wrong while twisting and flipping on the side of the trampoline.  I immediately felt pain in my midback.  I waited about a week to seek treatment thinking it would resolve.  I have been to a chiropractor (he said he put 5 ribs back in place.  Unfortunately, I have severe pain in a specific area in my back (midline between shoulder blades).  It hurts all the time, I am unable to twist or lift heavy objects.  I have pain while laying down and when getting up.  The pain is like a knife is stuck in my back, life as now is stalled.  I am seeing a physician in a few days but what do you think this may be?

Answer
Although the pain is probably related to the muscles being tight and guarding the area because of the trauma, it is still a good idea to rule out any fractures.  If your chiropractor did not take any X-rays to determine if a rib or vertebra was broken, he/she may have done you more harm than good.  Any traumatic injury should be checked for fractures before moving the area even for chiropractic manipulation.  Ask your physician about fractured ribs or vertebra to make sure that you're covering all possibilities.

Thank you for your follow-up question, Jenell.  I hope that my answer was helpful.
