food allergies and arthritis

Question
Hi, Rusty!  I read your response about the grandma asking if wheat allergy could cause arthritis symptoms.  I've been reading Dr. Braly's work about food allergies having an impact on arthritis, and this is also mentioned in Dr. Theodosakis's books.  I'd suggest researching this a little more, since there is more and more evidence that this does happen...perhaps more often than we now realize.  Thanks for letting me mention this.

Answer
Carol,

There is no research that backs this up. There has not been one scientific research study that I can find that backs up the idea that wheat allergies cause arthritis. I have done extensive searches in the medical literature for any study that makes a connection between wheat and arthritis. In fact there are several studies that show that whole wheat can help protect the body against autoimmune disease. The latest study that I read was in the June 2007 issue of the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition.

I have read many articles about wheat allergies causing arthritis. In fact I read several in researching the answer to the granddaughters question. I have yet to see in any article a reference to a scientific study to back the claims of the writer.

You will notice that in the reply I made that I did not totally rule out the possibility and even mentioned eliminating wheat from her grandmothers diet for a week to see if it helped. I also mentioned that wheat allergies are common. I just have not seen the medical evidence to back up the claims by the two doctors you mentioned. I am familiar with the works of the two doctors you mentioned. I am not impressed with either.
