Question
I take viox and it helps me very much but I have gained 15 lbs since I started taking it.  Does viox cause you to gain weight?  Should I tell my doctor about the weight gain?  Why does viox cause a weight gain?

Answer
Cheryl,

One of the side effects of Vioxx is unexplained weight gain. The government information on it suggest contacting your doctor immediately if this happens.

As to why Vioxx causes weight gain in some people is not understood. It usually does not and weight gain can be an early warning sign of a more serious problem later. Since it is possible for Viox to effect you liver, kidneys or other organs, weight gain can be a warning that your body is having a hard time with the drug.

Your doctor will be able to monitor this so that you remain healthy. Weight gain by it self is only possibly an early warning sign and should not cause you great concern but it is something to talk to your doctor about. If you are having a combination of these symptoms below then you should stop taking it and see your doctor immediately
bloody vomit
bloody diarrhea or black, tarry stools
swelling of the face, hands, feet, ankles, or lower legs
unexplained weight gain
fatigue, unusual tiredness
yellowing of the skin or eyes
right upper abdominal pain
flu-like symptoms
skin rash
itching
