Blue/Purple/Grey Hands/Feet Pins Needles

Question
I am 35, overall good health, ht 5'2" weight 110-115lbs. Take no medication, but do take vitamin supplements, b12, d3, fish oil, vit c. and a multi. Don't smoke, drink wine in moderation. Exercise 5-7 days a week 30-45 minutes, includes yoga and exercise bike. Prior to a FNSF that was fixed via ORIF i was a runner logging in around 20 miles a week in addition to Yoga 5 days week.

Symptoms all started after surgery 12/11. Feet turn purple/blue/grey/red when horizontal, constant pins and needles and a burning feeling but cool to touch. Feet get worse pins and needles when walking or exercising. Return to normal when elevated. Hands turn grey/blue in relation to cold and red w/heat or warmth. They are mottled looking at all times and appear to have edema. They are somewhat swollen at all times now.  Nailfold capillaries have not been inspected by a DR however the "halo" above my cuticles is VERY red and swollen looking and i can see little blood vessel lines. The skin in my hands is dry and wrinkled looking and my hands feel tight or hard to bend. Joints feel painful.

Internist ran ANA, RA, CBC Differential, C3 c4 and cryoglobulins and total protein electrophoresis all negative or in normal ranges. Arterial pulses in my lower extremeties are strong.

In addition to these noticeable symptoms i have experienced, bloody noses, excessive cold sweating, swollen groin node apprx 2 cm (on leg of orif), sudden appearance of ganglion type cyst on palm, red facial mottling, headaches and a general feeling of malaise.

I've given myself some time after the blood work came back ok to "recover" hoping that some of this was stress or anxiety induced, but everything seems to be getting worse.

Are we missing something or looking in the wrong direction? Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you so much for your time.

Answer
Keep in mind I'm not a doc, just a patient, but it sounds like you need to continue to work with your internist on this.  If you don't have confidence that s/he is working hard on your behalf, then by all means see someone else.

I know it's frustrating not knowing what's happening with your body, especially when you seemed to have excellent control over it.  I was a runner when these weird things started happening, too - in some ways I think I noticed the symptoms more because I was; like going out for a run on a Nov. morning and having my hands turn blue and, by the end of 4 mi., incredibly painful.

I often tell folks who are in the process of a diagnosis to keep a diary of symptoms; like, when they happen, what you were doing, where you were (out in cold?,) and what relieved them?  This can help your doc see frequency, anything new you may forget to to tell her/him, etc.  Make a list of questions before you go to any appointment, and maybe even take someone else with you.  Four ears are sometimes better than two when under stress.
