Sciatic pain + head/neck pain

Question
Hello.  My name is Michelle and I am 30 years old.  For the last 6 months or so, I have been having pain radiating from my lower/right side back, down my buttocks, and down my leg.  My dr. believes it to be sciatic nerve pain.  I took Advil and a muscle relaxer which did not help at all.  She then suggested I see a chiropractor.  I have an appointment next month.  I was wondering if you could tell me what I might expect...what the chiropractor could do for me.  I also just found out I am newly pregnant and was wondering if that will change my treatment at all.

Also, within the past month I have begun to have pain/discomfort in the back of my head down into my neck (right side of each) and I was wondering if this would be related to my sciatic pain or if it is something I should get checked out.

Thank you for your time!

Michelle

Answer
Michelle,

Thanks for the question.  I am sorry about the delay of my answer but I have been out of town on vacation.

Being pregnant will only change a few things in regards to chiropractic treatment. Obviously, you should have no xrays taken.  Next, I would not recommend electric modalities to be performed.  While there has not been significant research contra-indicating such treatments to pregnant women, I prefer not to use them.  I have seen hundreds of pregnant women with the same complaints.  They respond very well to manipulation and normally resolve their problems rather rapidly.

The DC will examine you to determine the problem and cause and then make treatment recommendations based on the findings. Manipulation will be performed to stabilize the pelvis and remove the irritation on the sciatic nerve.  Home instructions should include cold packs, rest, stretching type things. You will likely experience relief within 1-4 visits. It may take a little more to eliminate the problem, but you should do well.

As far as the head and neck, just tell the DC about that as well.  Often times when a patient has a sciatica or lower back problem, they eventually develop tightness and complaints up higher in the spine as well.

I  hope all goes well with your back and your baby.  I have 3 kids and they are a true blessing.

God Bless,

Dr. Boss
