Question
I was looking online at sleep apnea treatments and ran across your response to someone's question if chiropractic care could help sleep apnea. Even though there is no research evidence on chiropractic and sleep apnea it certainly would not hurt for a person with sleep apnea to get chiropractic care and it could very well help by supporting their overall physical well being. Regardless of a persons health condition chiropractic care will only help them function better, granted the chiropractor may have to use low force techniques depending on the persons physical condition, but everyone should get regular chiropractic adjustments.

Answer
Scott,

Obstructive sleep apnea is usually caused by obesity and upper airway collapse. These are not conditions that any chiropractic treatment can remedy. Any chiropractor who says otherwise makes a claim in the absence of any evidence to contrary.

While many chiropractors claim that "Regardless of a persons health condition chiropractic care will only help them function better", there again is little evidence to support this statement.

This is not to say that chiropractic manipulation is worthless; rather, it is to responsibly state that the current best evidence supports the appropriate use of spinal manipulation for specific musculoskeletal disorders.

Evidence-based health care relies in part on the best current evidence to support the use of a particular treatment for a particular disorder; the other components of equal importance include the provider's best clinical judgement and the patient's preferences, but both of these components are equally are weighed against the best available evidence.
