Question
Hi.

My doctor says that I have sciatica due to a slipped disk.  I also have slight scoliosis and the beginnings of arthritis in my spine.

The waiting list here in UK is 4.5 years to see a specialist.  I am in a lot of pain with tingling, pins and needles and some numbness in my leg from bottom to foot.  I am so worried about waiting for so long.  Although I am taking Ibubrofen and now Tramadol as well, I would like to know what damage can happen to me if I have to stay like this for 4 .5 years.  I am 48 and normally in excellent health.

Thank you for any reply and for your time and trouble.

Jo

Answer
Hi Jo,

Perhaps you could request a referral to a physiotherapist while waiting to see the specialist physician.  There are many techniques to help reduce and sometimes even prevent damage done with disc problems (McKenzie method/Strategic Orthopedic Method--being just two of many methods)

I join you in your concern with having these symptoms for 4.5 years.  I do believe that the sooner they can be addressed, the better your outcome will be.  Please check with a physiotherapist and your personal physician to see if this type of treatment is appropriate for you.

Best wishes,

Jenny
