Question
hello
I dont even know how to start. I got herpes when I was 16 and had lesions on the outer thighs of both legs alternately. I would break out about every month. It seemed to get a hold of me unusually viciously I think  because of a weakened immune system due to bulimia. I was bulimic for 25 years. I am now 41 and the lesions no longer appear on my thighs but the pain in my back wich always accompanies a breakout has become so intense and chronic that I began taking motrin 800's about 6-10 times a day for the last two years. I ended up with pancreatitis, stomach inflammation and esophageal erosion..so motrin is now off limits. I was told that this is post-herpetic neurolgesia but it wont go away. I feel crippled, because the pain is so intense. I have to be back at work in two weeks and my doctor keeps saying it will go away by then..I'm wondering if there is a way to snip the damaged nerve, or some way to block the pain. I'm desperate. right now I'm using tramadol 50 tid, acylovir 800 tid, and lidoderm patches (which make me feel confused and strange)The acylovir I take all the time. Please help.

Answer
Hi Dawn and thanks for writing,

I have also experienced recurrent Herpes Simplex (Shingles) breakouts and am aware of the excruciating pain that can accompany a Herpes outbreak.  Generally I always found plain old Ibuprofen much more effective for the pain caused by the inflammation during an outbreak much more effective than any of the strong narcotic analgesics the doctors gave me, and for long term therapy I have had a lot of success with Lysine.

Lysine is not a pain medication, but it is a natural supplement that helps calm the virus and educe outbreaks.  To be honest, I am very lucky as I have very little post-viral neuralgia, but I believe the Lysine has contributed to that so I would recommend you give it a try for at least three months.  Go to a good Health Food Store and speak to a clerk and ask for a good brand of Lysine.

I sincerely hope it helps you and you find some relief.

All my best,
Margot
