Question
My husband's left leg turns outward when lying down-consequently the outer ankle bone is alwys face down-I notice it is getting red. I put cream on it 3x a day and massage it to get blood circulating-I am trying to prevent a pressure sore-how can we stop it from happening?

Answer
It sounds like you're doing all the right things so far.  There are a couple of extra measures that you might try.

Try elevating the left foot at night by placing a pillow or two under it at the calf level.  This will 'float' your husband's foot and ankle in the air and relieve the pressure occurring all night.

There are also padded foot coverings that can be worn at night to keep the pressure from being directly on the bone.  Your husband's doctor should be able to supply them through PT/OT or wound care therapists.

Thank you for your question, Linda.  I hope that my answer was helpful.  If you have further questions on pressure sore treatment, feel free to contact me at [email protected].
