Question
QUESTION: Hi, I know someone who had a back injury that tore his muscle and injured several disks and has had some surgeries.  He attends online schooling but experiences massive pain because he has a desktop not a laptop.  Are grants available to someone in his situation?  Can he get a free or discount laptop?

Rosana

ANSWER: Hi Rosana,

There are places that will offer mini grants and refurbished computers for people with disabilities.

For instance, this place is in GA:

http://www.touchthefuture.us/star.htm

They offer refurbished computers/laptops for free.

If you would like me to research more, please tell me what state/town you live in.

Hope this is helpful.

QUESTION: Hi, Jon.  Thanks for the info.  I need a resource in the area of Orange, California, where the individual lives.  (I believe this is in the Orange County area of California).

Let me know if there is a place in or near this vicinity that offers grants or refurbished laptops for disabled persons.

Thanks for your assistance.

Answer
Mini Grants for Artists with disabilities (could swing $500 for a laptop if this person wants to make some art)

These folks may be of some assistance:

Assistive Technology Exchange Center ATEC
http://cate.ca.gov/
1601 East Street Andrew Place
Santa Ana, CA, 92705
714-361-6200
714-361-6220 (Fax)
714-543-1873 (TTY)

Or an appeal to the North Orange County Computer Club
http://www.noccc.org/

Also, search and post on CraigsList:

http://orangecounty.craigslist.org/

here's one that would work for email, and web browsing:
http://orangecounty.craigslist.org/sys/815949843.html

or this one
http://orangecounty.craigslist.org/sys/813814661.html

Try searching the "free" section or post on the "wanted" section.

I hope this helps.

Jon
