Back Pain and Rib Abnormality

Question
Dr. Gillman,
I have had some back pain for quite some time just to the right of my spine in the thoracic area and it is very painful.  My girlfriend noticed that on my chest the rib(s) seem to be protruding farther than the ribs on the other side, and when following the ribs around to the back, the location of the pain is consistent with the rib abnormality.  I have noticed that it can be especially painful when I take a deep breath and bend over, and the sensation is not only pain but burning as well. I have yet to go to a chiropractor concerning this problem and wondered if you might have any advice to give me or insight into my problem.  Anything would be helpful.  Thank you, Doctor.

Answer
Kent,

This is a common problem that chiropractors deal with.  Provided you didn't previously fracture the rib, and also provided you don't have sternal cartilage inflammation, it should be an easy fix.  The typical joint manipulation maneuver involves you laying on your back while the doctor sets the rib from front to back.  It's a textbook maneuver.  Usually it is not painful, and it sometimes provides instantaneous relief.  Let me know how it goes.

Good luck.
