Question
my back pain began 2 years ago after i bent down to lift something, it lasted a few days. I have attended my GP and have had x-rays but to no avail.  I started attending a reputable chiropractor 1 year ago which was a success ( she performs accupuncture and deep tissue and attributes complaint to joint pain.) but lately the back pain has become more frequent and severe this time its lasted 6 weeks and its still there.  I find it most uncomfortable when sitting for 30 mins or more, driving is also a problem, the pain starts off as sharp in the lower back at one side and shoots down my right thigh.  the muscles shut down and i find it hard to stand or walk, lying down for 15-20 mins alleviates the pain for a while.  Any suggestions or any idea how long this pain will continue to last for as its becoming a right pain!!!

Answer
Dear Fiona,

From what you have described, it is very suspicious that you may be suffering from facet sydrome or disc herniation.  X-ray will not detect these two conditions.  The symptoms point to either one of them.  The pain will not improve unless proper management is done.  To be definite, MRI is usually done to detect disc herniation and the severity if it is the case.  In my experience, Acupuncture and Chiropractic can help with the pain but if you experience any leg numbness or weakness, surgery might be the option.  Visit a chiropractor or acupuncturist or your reputable chiropractor and she will be able to guide you to proper management of your condition once a diagnosis is made.
