Rotated Pelvis

Question
I have a history of injuries in the last 8 years, which I believe to be related to a rotated pelvis. From a young age I can remember having pain in my right shoulder/neck when sprinting over a number of repetitions. At 38 I still get the same feeling when fatigued.  Over the past few years I have had a number of calf strains, generally my right calf.  I have regular deep tissue massage and see an osteopath.  I have recently had my pelvis corrected and now want to strengthen the muscles to hold it in place.  I have very limited flexibility on my right side.  If I place my right foot onto me left knee, I have to pull the foot up very hard to get it on the knee, my right knee remains very high and will not flex downwards, I have no such problem with the left. Again this is a problem I have noticed from Childhood.  At 38 am I to old to get this corrected?  My mother has had 3 hip replacements and now has no hip due to osteoarthritis, can this be hereditary? What exercise can I do to strengthen the pelvis area.  I think my right hip rotated forward. My right appears to be lower the the left.

European Osteopaths, England Chiropractors, Staten Island Chiropractor, Sports Injury Expert, Staten Island Chiropractic Expert, ACBSP.com, Chiropractic orthopedist,

Hello Nick Wetheridge,

I am sorry to hear of your chronic condition.

It looks like your Email Communication to me via AllExperts.com  from Great Britain (England).  If I do not give enough information,,,, do not hesitate to RE-contact me here at:  http://www.allexperts.com/ep/965-100794/Chiropractors/Victor-Dolan-DC-DACBSP.htm

I make note that your question comes from England, our European cousins.  In Europe, in England-
unlike the United States- MANY professions utilize physical manual medicine.  Osteopaths, naturopaths, homeopaths, chiropractors, even medical doctors - manipulate the joints and the spine on your 'side of the pond'.
I must admit that I am a Doctor of Chiropractic, and as a DC,,,, I am partial towards the Chiropractic techniques of spinal adjustment, manual manipulation.
You state: ".....which I believe to be related to a rotated pelvis......I have regular deep tissue massage and see an osteopath....."- you talk/ think -  kind of like a Chiropractic Doctor.  It sounds like 'rotated pelvis', 'osteopath'--- it sounds like you are having a manual diagnosis, with manual manipulation by your D.O. (Doctor of Osteopathy).  If you Osteopath IS a 'manipulator', IS physically manipulating your spine, joints and extremities--- you are probably in a good place, in the right place.
Your D.O. should be able to manipulate your pelvis/ spine/ extremities to move better, be more properly aligned, and have greater muscular balance.  Your Osteopath should be able to give you a list of exercise DOs and DON'Ts.  IF your Osteopath, or perhaps your licensed massage therapist cannot help you in that area,,,, then I would recommend finding a local DC- a Doctor of Chiropractic.
There are many 'specialties' in medicine, and chiropractic is no different- see:  http://www.acatoday.org/pdf/ApprovedChiropracticSpecialtyPrograms.pdf
Being a DACBSP- sports injury specialist, I would recommend a Chiropractor with additional sports injury training, but perhaps a Chiro with additional orthopedic or neurological education could be of help to you.

Your Osteopath- if he is diagnosing and treating a 'rotated pelvis' with manual manipulation can help you with exercise/ flexibility recommendations; after all this Doctor already has 'hands on' to you.

You ask- ".....Again this is a problem I have noticed from Childhood.  At 38 am I to old to get this corrected?.....", it may be to old to get this 100% corrected, but manual manipulative medicine by your local DC or DO should go a loooooooooong way in reducing the effects of this misalignment.  Following a regimen of care- and given the loooooooooooong history you present- the regimen of care will have to be lengthy and multifaceted.  Can this be corrected 100% possibly.  Can this be 'mostly' corrected- minimizing it's impact upon you-- absolutely yes.

You state: "....My mother has had 3 hip replacements and now has no hip due to osteoarthritis, can this be hereditary? ....."- VERY VERY good observation!  Osteoarthritis is the deterioration of joints DUE TO MISALIGNMENT.  Reduce the misalignment, and the joint lasts longer.  Leave a misalignment there and joints 'wear out' FASTER.  I have some information taht I hand out in my Staten Island Chiropractic office:

Degenerative    Disk     Disease

DDD = Degenerative Disc Disease;
OsteoArthritis- THE most common Arthritis-  the 憌ear and tear disease?.

DJD = Degenerative Joint Disease; = similar/ same OsteoArthritis.

Degenerative Disc Disease  (old term =  DJD) is  actually  a  quite  common  condition.   However,  the course of the condition   is  highly variable.   Some patients with DJD literally cannot walk, yet other patients with similar X-ray/ MRI findings may be able to run marathons or lift heavy weights.   Some people suffer for only a few days with pain and symptoms, some people suffer for months. Although the course is highly variable, there are certain steps that are always helpful to follow:  Ice the area when painful-  10/ 15minutes on, 30/ 45 minutes off;  avoid certain postures and movements;  bend the knees when coughing or sneezing;  bend the knees when lifting anything;  do not extend legs straight out when sitting, laying down, lifting, or driving.   Avoiding certain movements and postures will prevent aggravation of the condition.   Practicing good postures and movement patterns will help the condition heal and be less painful.  DDD, DJD,  OsteoArthritis, -  deteriorating discs (disk)   is/ are  often caused by,  or often  concurrent with the Vertebral Subluxation Complex.  VSC is a misalignment which hastens deterioration of the joints involved.    Misalignment/  improper motion patterns  CAUSE/ HASTEN  OsteoArthritic degeneration.

         Vertebral   Subluxation   Complex    (a.k.a.  憇ubluxation?
The vertebral subluxation complex is the underlying cause of many healthcare problems.
A subluxation interferes with the proper functioning of joints, and can cause osteo-arthritic degeneration, Degenerative Disk Disease, degenerative joint disease, etc.
A subluxation interferes with the proper functioning of the nervous system (the master system which controls and coordinates all function within the body) and may cause various other conditions, symptoms and problems.

Misalignment/  improper motion patterns  CAUSE/ HASTEN  OsteoArthritic degeneration.

Subluxation  is  a  serious  condition  identified  by  its  five  parts:
    Spinal Kinesiopathology:
This is fancy way of saying the bones of the spine have lost their normal motion and position. It restricts your ability to turn and bend. It sets in motion the other four components.
    Neuropathophysiology:
Improper spinal function can choke, stretch, or irritate delicate nerve tissue. The resulting nerve  system  dysfunction  can  cause  symptoms  elsewhere  in  the  body.
    Myopathology:
Muscles supporting the spine can weaken, atrophy, or become tight and go into spasm. The  resulting  scar  tissue  changes  muscle  tone,  requiring  repeated  spinal  adjustments.
    Histopathology:
A rise in temperature from an increase in blood and lymph supplies result in swelling and inflammation.   Inflammed  Discs can easily bulge,  herniate,  tear,  or  degenerate.   Other  soft tissues  may  also  suffer  permanent  damage.
    Pathophysiology:
The VSC contributes to  OsteoArthritic  degeneration.  Bone spurs and other abnormal bony growths attempt to fuse malfunctioning spinal joints. This spinal decay, scar tissue, and long-term  nerve  dysfunction  can  cause  other  systems  of  the  body  to  malfunction.

The Vertebral Subluxation Complex describes what happens when spinal bones lose their normal movement patterns and position.  When subluxated, joints are in a stressed, vulnerable, compromised condition.  Subluxation may cause Arthritis, Disk Herniation, Disk Degeneration,  or aggravate such conditions.

Misalignment/  improper motion patterns  CAUSE/ HASTEN  OsteoArthritic degeneration.

Vertebral  Subluxation  cannot be corrected through chemicals (medicine), stretching, yoga, vitamins or physical therapy alone.     Subluxation- a neuro/skeletal/muscular-   mechanical-   problem  requires  a   mechanical correction-  -  -    a manipulation,     best   performed  with  the chiropractic  adjustment.

Along with this information, my Staten Island Pain patients receive this handout:

PAIN

Pain  is a  憆ed light on the dashboard?   RED  LIGHT  =   Trouble !!

Pain  is  your  body  telling  you  that  something  is  wrong.
Think  you  should  listen??

That RED LIGHT on the dashboard of your car-
-- do you ignore it until the car breaks down,
or do you get it checked and correct the problem?

Pain,
pain in your body-
-- do you ignore it until your body breaks down,
or do you get it checked and correct the problem?

Pain,
do you cover up the pain by taking a painkiller?
Take a painkiller,
mask the pain,
and allow a problem to progress in your body?

Pain  Killing  medication???  =    16,000  deaths   ( probably  under-reported )
DEATH ! ? ! ?    better   watch  out  on  those  medications!!!

                             NOTICE  ON  PAIN  RELIEVERS:

Label changes ORDERED by FDA;  the FDA announced proposed label changes for OTC over-the-counter pain relievers to  include the potential for stomach bleeding and liver damage (FDA news  206- 207;  12-9-06) ;
SIXTEEN THOUSAND DEATHS: "Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) are effective medications for the treatment of many chronically painful medical conditions. However, it is estimated that 25% of all serious adverse drug reactions involve NSAIDs, with more than 100,000 hospitalizations and 16,000 deaths occurring annually due to NSAID-induced gastrointestinal (GI) events."----- http://hhc.sagepub.com/cgi/content/abstract/13/6/468   Home Health Care Management & Practice, Vol. 13, No. 6, 468-475 (2001)  Motrin, Advil = NSAIDS

The  American Heart Association issued a scientific statement  recommending medical doctors change the way they prescribe OTC pain relievers from a first choice  to an alternate of recommending non-pharmacologic treatment (AHA statement  2-26-07).

NSAID Acceleration of ARTHRITIS; an important side effect of Aspirin and other NSAIDS is that it will inhibit cartilage repair and accelerate cartilage  destruction ( Journal of Rheumatology, 1982; 9: 3- 5 ).   Many times people take NSAIDS  for  the pain of Arthritis,  not realizing these drugs may make the underlying condition worse.   These medications  cover  up  the  pain,  and  cause  the  problem  to   worsen.

http://rinf.com/alt-news/business-news/prescription-drugs-kill-300-percent-more-... = An analysis of 168,900 autopsies conducted in Florida in 2007 found that three times as many people were killed by legal drugs as by cocaine, heroin and all methamphetamines put together.    BE  CAREFUL  WITH  THAT  MEDICATION !!!
It was reported in 2000, that 700,000 U.S. citizens die as a result from medical causes (iatrogenics). Of course, other records and statistics had the number above the one million mark. Whether 700,000 or one million people, that's a lot of innocent people dying from visiting a hospital and trusting a medical doctor.= http://www.dherbs.com/articles/iatrogenics-99.html

Pain  can  often  be  the  result  of  the  Vertebral  Subluxation  Complex.
Vertebral Subluxation  is  actually  a  quite  common  condition.   Doctors of Chiropractic look for pathological conditions which may require referral to other specialties,   and also look for 慡ubluxation? Other disciplines look for pathology, but overlook the importance of alignment and movement in the spine which affects our nervous system  (the master control system- ALL health disciplines learn this).  VSC- 慡ubluxation??can be the cause of many symptoms and conditions.

Only  a  Doctor of Chiropractic  will  evaluate  and  treat  for  VSC,   as  well  as  other  pathology.

The course of VSC is highly variable.   Some patients with VSC literally cannot walk, yet other patients with similar test findings may be able to run marathons or lift heavy weights.    Some patients immediately develop symptoms related to the VSC,  some patients take years to develop symptoms.  Some people suffer for only a few days with pain and symptoms, some people suffer for months.  Some people recover in days, some take months or years, depending upon severity of the condition.

I hope this background information helps you.

"....My mother has had 3 hip replacements and now has no hip due to osteoarthritis, can this be hereditary? ....."- not only do we inherit our genes from our parents, but we learn from observation----- we have the same structure as Mom/Dad, we have the same POSTURE as Mom or Dad, we 'inherit' the same movement patterns, we learn the same diet,,,, you ARE predisposed to the same things as Mom- especially if you continue the same postures/ diet/ movement patterns as Mom.  IF you change things,,,, then the predisposition does not have to guarantee the same outcome.

"....What exercise can I do to strengthen the pelvis area.  I think my right hip rotated forward. My right appears to be lower the the left....."- you seem to be in good hands (pun intended) , I would ask the massage therapist and the D.O. that is currently treating you.  If they cannot be of help- find your local Doctor of Chiropractic for a 'hands on' evaluation and recommendations.  I hesitate to give recomendations from this distance.

Proper alignment, proper motion is sooooo important.  I was honored to be selected to care for USA Olympians at the Olympic Training Center this year.  The health staff AND the athletes realize how important proper alignment, proper motion, proper joint balance, proper muscle balance, proper nerve communication is for a truly efficient machine (the Human Body). Chiropractic evaluation and manipulation- or some similar approach helps olympians to perform better, recuperate quicker from injury, recover faster from exercise, and prevent injury.
It sounds like you are going to something similar-- good choice! and good luck.

I do think there is hope for you.  I do think your problems can be corrected and/or managed.  Your future is not written in stone.  Continue with your LMT and the manipulating DO (if not seek a DC).  If you need further do not hesitate to REcontact me here.

Be patient- keep up with your REGIMEN of care.

I hope this helps. Do not hesitate to recontact me if necessary.  Your Staten Island Chiropractic expert signing off,
